Variational Principle for Open Quantum Many-Body Systems

 

Dissipative quantum many-body systems are extremely challenging to analyze, as most theoretical tools developed for equilibrium systems cannot be applied. I will present a variational principle that can be applied to obtain a better understanding of the essential physics within these systems, such as dissipative phase transitions [1,2]. Within the context of a dissipative Ising model, I will compare the variational method to recent results obtained using a tensor network approach [3]. Finally, I will demonstrate how a better fundamental understanding of dissipative quantum many-body systems enables the realization of a novel class of dissipative quantum sensors [4].
