Oberseminar WS 2011/2012

 

"100 Years of Superconductivity"

Mo. 14:00-15:00 h at the Seminar Room 201 of the II. Physikalisches Institut, University of Cologne.

In 1911 H.K. Onnes found that Mercury (Hg) looses its electrical resistivity below 4.2 Kelvin. Since this discovery 100 years ago, the macroscopic quantum state "superconductivity" has not only fascinated and inspired physicists from the fundamental point of view, superconductivity is nowadays also used in various technical applications. Over the last 100 years, many surprising and often unexpected phenomena have been observed in experimental studies of superconducting materials, which have led to the development of new theoretical concepts. Vice versa, unconventionel effects have been theoretically predicted, which have later been confirmed experimentally. The aim of this Advanced Seminar is to cover the field of superconductivity starting from the basic phenomena of conventional superconductors until the most recent discoveries of high-Tc superconductors, which are subject of current research.
