M2.4: Magnetization of a superconductor

Superconductors are characterized by two effects: a vanishing resistance and the so-called Meißner-Ochsenfeld effect, which descirbes the expulsion of the magnetic flux from the core of a superconductor. Type-I superconductors are perfect diamagnets meaning that the flux expulsion, while type-II superconductors only show a partial flux expulsion. In this experiment, the Meißner-Ochsenfeld is measured as a function of temperature for different magnetic fields.In addition, the magnetization is measeured as a function of the magnetic field at various temperature. From these data, the phase diagram and the free entahlpy are determined, and the demagnetization factor, which depends on the sample geometry, is derived.
